'Empire' truly ranks as one of the sequels that surpasses the original and leaves us hanging for another. My mind goes back to when I saw this at age six, being totally mesmerized by the battle of Hoth that found my hands in a continuous rewind/play cycle. Kudos to Phil Tippett for excellent work on the AT-ATs. My only disappointment with the film was that little of Dagobah's "massive life form readings" were shown other than snakes and lizards. The Empire keeps striking back. This is the best of all 5 Star Wars movies. With this came the rare sequal that isn't just a redo of the previous movies, but brings something new and different from the first. In this, we get a startling revelation (well, at least in 1980 it would have been startling; that thing's been so spoofed, you'd have to live in a hole in the ground to miss it; but anyway, I digress) a question to tickle us for the next sequal, the best battle in all of the Star Wars movies, and a love story between Han and Leia. This was more of an original story than the other sequals, since the story line revolved more around the individual characters than a great threat to the galaxy or a planet(Ep. 6: A Death Star, how original; Ep. 1: Naboo under attack. When George Lucas made the Empire Strikes Back, he succeeded where so many filmmakers have failed. A Sequel to match the original, and the secret is simple, don't mess with the formula that worked the first time.
The Darkest movie in the trilogy, Empire Strikes back is also home one of the finest battles in movie history. The Battle of Hoth is so full of imagination and excitement, it still stands out as one of my favourite action sequences of all time. Empire also introduces us to Yodi, the Jedi Master, who now has to train Luke to take over the fight against the dark side of the force, While Han and Leia try to escape the clutches of the Galactic Empire.
Cloud city is the setting for the finale of the movie, another beautifully created scenic world from the mind of the great George Lucas. While Han is tortured and then turned over to Jabba's bounty hunters, Luke Finally has to face Darth Vader and learn the truth behind the power.
